BOOM! an Explosion of Youth Media

So TomTom Nation, MTV, V, Clubs for Young People and Apple have all got together to do something for young people.

It’s called BOOM! and 1000 young people will be trained in video editing by the end of 2009.

Apple provide the kit, MTV the digital space and the airtime for the films, V accredit the volunteering time and Clubs for Young People is the network of clubs that distribute the training etc.

With a Hippety-Hi and a Hippety-Ho

The first draft of the Sense training day is done diddley done. It was a labour of love and I am still looking for ways of making it even better. I will be getting Safiya and Duane’s feedback over e-mail in the next week so I can incorporate their thoughts and ideas.

The training day is going to be for the steering group. It should be about 3 hours long and we have LOTS to cram into the day. All the major decisions will be made by the steering group on this and we need to make sure we get it right! As the organisers, we need to make sure they have the necessary training and support to fulfil their roles.

What we will cover on the day:

• History of Sense
• The future of Sense – where are we going with all this?!
• What’s out there now
• Skills and further training
• Rewarding young peoples work.

I have tried to keep the day interactive, interesting and professional. We are looking into having a cool venue too, and hopefully a special guest over lunch. Exciting stuff. I had a conversation (it was over text message, does that still count as a conversation?) with Duane random music videos. I like Genius of Love by Tom Tom Club. The dog looks like Spike from Rugrats which reminds me of being in year 3 pretending I was Tommy Pickles, while Elicia was Grandpa…

Is the song about drugs? Love? Loving black music? Enlighten me.
Save the URL and blare the song out when the days are dark and you need something only a happy song will cure.

Just sent out the flyer to a few hundred people. I think we’ll get some good responses. I hope.

Really pleased with Krishna’s draft consultation. Wanna speed up time so we can get it done already!

I’m a mixture of confidence and fear on this one. Will this be the time or will I have to wait another year before things really get going?

Not sure if I should be blogging this! Is this normal for someone to work this late?! Well my rationale is that this is all part of the journey and otherwise how would you know that this is what I am doing?

I need to get some sleep!

The Bare Necessities of Life Will Come To You…

Right, so the other week I tottered over to Sense HQ to talk media, young people and lots of other exciting things with Mr Sense (Duane), and Safiya. We have all either worked in media, or with young people at some point in our lives and have come together to see how we can take Sense forward. We all have different backgrounds and levels of experience, but have really come together in the name of Sense.

Sense is going to develop into something that young people need, and aspire to be part of. But before we make the important decisions, we need to get young people involved. What’s the point of assuming us adults knowing what young people need? Sense is for young people and we are just the worker bees. The best way of finding out what young people want it to ask them and get them involved.

We decided to set up a steering group – a core group of young people who volunteer their time to Sense, get media experience, and make all the major decisions about how Sense works. Young people will apply to join the steering group in the next few weeks, so please lookout for the flyer!

I have landed the task of developing how we train the young people so they can fulfil their role properly. Deadline is this Friday at 6pm. Eeeek.

Anyway, I think Sense has produced some really good work in the past and I am looking forward to adding my own sparkle and taking it some place magical.

p.s I apologise for my username. I couldn’t get it to work properly so I have resorted to using a childhood nickname. Other childhood nicknames include: Krishypoo, Krishywinkle, Mowgli and Dave. I thought Krishywishy was the least offence and least embarrassing…

Fresh Starts

Just finished an utterly inspiring meeting. Really feeling like we have two great minds in Safiya and Krishna – Perfect skill set.
